My family immigrated from Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand to St. Paul where I was born and raised. In middle school, I learned the importance of having mentors in my life. My classmates and I were among the first students to join Get Ready, an early intervention and college awareness organization that matched us with college-age mentors. I understand the barriers that many low-income first generation college bound students face. I love sharing my knowledge and experience with the Karen youth. My favorite saying is "Global Studies for Global Leader" because it reminds me that keeping an open mind to different perspectives is important in today's society. I graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2011 with a degree in Global Studies focusing on East Asia studies.
I have been working with the Karen for over 2 years. It brings me great joy everyday to see these kids. With encouragement and positive role models, our youth can become a powerful voice for their community. Aside from working directly with students, I also get to assist all the mentors in developing curriculum, providing supplies, and helping them become strong change agents in the field of education. In my spare time, I like to read and travel. I have my B.A. from the Univ. of Minnesota Twin Cities in Theatre and Asian Languages/Literatures with a minor in Teaching ESL.
My family immigrated to America before I was born, and they had a difficult time learning English and acclimating to this culture here. Although I was born here, I only spoke with my relatives and so Korean became my first language. When I entered kindergarten, I had to go to ESL because I had a hard time understanding my teacher and the other children. I really struggled, but eventually I caught on. My favorite subjects in elementary school were English and Music. Now, I speak English quite well and work as a sales analyst for Nabisco. Some of my favorite things to do include: trying out new restaurants, enjoying theatre, playing board games and making cards. I understand some of the difficulties involved in trying to learn a new language, and I 'm really excited to utilize my experiences to help others succeed. I graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Business Administration with a focus in marketing.
I am currently a Cosmetologist, EMT, Musician, and have studied in film/theatre acting for several years. Music has been in my life since I was very young. The three instruments that I'm mainly passionate about are the piano, drums, and guitar. I grew up playing these three instruments mostly, but I also play the bass guitar and the blues harp. When I'm not online gaming with friends, I mostly spend time playing the guitar, singing Michael Buble songs, and brainstorming cool film ideas with friends. Aside from all those that I just mentioned, I have an even greater passion to serve. I am a firm believer in education, not just the education that you find in school, but also the education children can find for themselves and in themselves. I studied at the Scot Lewis Beauty School and graduated from the Emergency Medicine program at North Memorial Medical Center in 2012.
